To the editor:

I would like to relate a story about Sen. Nick Rerras.

Last summer a tragic event caused my niece to be placed into foster care in California.

Needless to say, the family here was extremely anxious to have her brought to the Shore to be with relatives.

Due to new laws regarding transporting children across state lines, we needed in-depth background checks.

After months and many delays, I emailed Rerras in desperation, not really expecting a reply.

The next day I was driving through Cape Charles and saw Rerras on the sidewalk with his family. I stopped the car and approached him.

He was a complete gentleman, and having never met me invited me into his home to hear my problem.

Three days later I received a conference call from Rerras and the chief of the State Police in Richmond. Days later we were cleared and my niece was released into our custody.

I cannot overly express my gratitude that the senator would take the time to listen to my personal problem and act on it in such a timely manner.

He is the type of politician I thought no longer existed, one that believes in the concerns of his constituents, large or small. He will have my support in November.
